The engineering student who slapped Mamata’s nephew
After he
slapped Abhishek Banerjee, TMC workers beat him up mercilessly and said
this was a planned attack on life of Banerjee by an ‘outsider’.
The youth who slapped Mamata Banerjee's nephew on Sunday at a public meeting has been identified as Debashis Acharya, 25, a third-year BTech student of an engineering college in Durgapur, according to a report in the The Telegraph.
The newspaper, quoting the boy’s father, said that he is ‘good in studies but has a whimsical nature’.
After he slapped Trinamool Congress MP and nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee, at a public meeting in East Midnapore, the TMC said this was planned attack on life of Banerjee by an ‘outsider’.
The Trinamool Youth Congress workers and leaders, present on the dais, sprung into action, caught hold of the youth and started beating him up after pinning him on to the ground.
He was then taken below the stage and thrashed mercilessly by the enraged party workers. The seriously injured youth was admitted in the local health centre.
Quoting a surgeon at the hospital where the youth is being treated, the newspaper said: "He has suffered multiple fractures; there are innumerable injury marks. We suspect he has suffered internal haemorrhage. A CT scan is being done. If his condition is serious, he will be shifted to a Calcutta hospital."
Some Trinamul activists said the youth claimed he was a press photographer.
"We did not know who he was. He came to the dais under the pretext of wanting to click pictures on his mobile camera and all of a sudden attacked Abhishek.
The incident led to chaos as party workers thrashed the attacker severely and later went on a rampage, targeting policemen and media personnel at the meeting convened by the Trinamool Youth in Chandipur.
Taking security personnel and party workers unawares, the youth mounted the dais while seemingly clicking photos on his mobile phone and came close to Banerjee.
Before anyone could react, the attacker - donning a cap - slapped the leader on the face soon after he had started his speech. Taken aback, Banerjee moved back, and the youth's second attempt to hit him did not succeed.
The attack on Banerjee triggered pandemonium at the meeting venue, as party workers turned their wrath on police and media personnel. Several policemen sustained injuries, while the representative of an electronic channel had to be rushed to the hospital after he was beaten up with bamboo canes. His camera was also broken into pieces.
Later, Trinamool workers put up a road blockade.
Pak boat that exploded was carrying suspected terrorists: Defence Minister
'They were suspected terrorists as they committed suicide. The route taken by the boat was not normal, even the smugglers take the busy route so that they can mingle with other boats,' Manohar Parrikar said.
Attempting to lay to rest the controversy and speculation over the ‘Pakistani terror boat’ that blew itself up off the Gujarat after being chased by the Coast Guard on the intervening night of Dec 31 and Jan 1, Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said on Monday, "I think they were suspected terrorists, as they committed suicide. A normal boat even carrying drugs can surrender. The Coast Guard has done the right job at the right time based on intelligence inputs. The route taken by the boat was not normal, even the smugglers normally take the busy route so that they can mingle with other boats."
Parrikar was addressing the media in New Delhi this morning. "The boat was laden with explosives and could have damaged the Coast Guard vessel," he added.
Parrikar also said that there was another Pakistani boat, but in international waters
The suspicious Pakistani fishing boat exploded into a ball of fire off the Gujarat coast and sank after it was intercepted by the Coast Guard, the government said last Friday.
The dramatic incident took place on the night of Dec 31-Jan 1, and the Coast Guard's Deputy Director General K.R. Nautiyal said he suspected "something serious".
He told the media that the boat first tried to get away after a Coast Guard ship asked it to halt for a check of its crew and goods. After six hours, it switched off its lights early Thursday just inside the Indian waters.
The crew members, four of whom were spotted, then went to the deck below. It then blew up, indicating it may have been carrying explosives.
A defence ministry statement had said the Pakistani boat, which had set off from near Karachi, Pakistan's southern port city, was planning "some illicit transaction". Its destination was unknown.
The Coast Guard and the navy got into the act following an intelligence tip about a suspicious Pakistani boast.
The boat was spotted by a Dornier aircraft and intercepted by Coast Guard ships near the India-Pakistan maritime boundary, 365 km from Porbandar in Gujarat, shortly before the onset of New Year.
A Coast Guard ship warned the boat to stop for investigation but it increased speed and tried to get away.
"(A) hot pursuit continued for nearly one hour, and the Coast Guard ship managed to stop the fishing boat after firing warning shots," the statement said.
"Four persons were seen on the boat who disregarded all warnings by the Coast Guard ship to stop and cooperate with investigation."
The suspicious crew then hid themselves below the deck and set the vessel on fire, resulting in an explosion and a major fire.
"Due to darkness, bad weather and strong winds, the boat and persons on board could not be saved or recovered. The boat burnt and sank in the same position in early hours of Jan 1," the statement said.
The Coast Guard's Nautiyal said the boat sank at 6.33 a.m. after being cornered in the sea.
"There must be something serious," he said. "Otherwise there was no reason to try to escape... or to switch off the lights."
He said the Coast Guard will connect the dots when the Coast Guard ship which cornered the suspicious boat returns to base.
When the boat exploded and sank, an Indian Dornier was in the air.
Nautiyal called the incident the outcome of "good coordination between the intelligence and forces".
According to military officials, vigil has been increased along India's maritime boundaries for the last two months due to several inputs on possible threats from the sea.
The Indian Navy chief has last month warned of increased threats from the sea.
'Dabangg' SP nabs cop taking Rs 10,000 bribe in Patna
Patna City
Superintendent of Police Shivdeep Waman Lande, popularly known as
“Dabangg IPS officer”, held Moradabad inspector Sarv Chandra by his
collar and dragged him to the police vehicle at Dak Bangalow Chowk,
where the latter had allegedly come to collect a bribe of Rs 10,000 from
two local traders.
PATNA: A high-voltage drama involving Bihar and Uttar Pradesh policemen unfolded on the streets of Patna on Sunday, leading to the detention and subsequent release of a crime branch inspector from Moradabad on bribery charges.
Patna City Superintendent of Police Shivdeep Waman Lande, popularly known as “Dabangg IPS officer”, held Moradabad inspector Sarv Chandra by his collar and dragged him to the police vehicle at Dak Bangalow Chowk, where the latter had allegedly come to collect a bribe of Rs 10,000 from two local traders.
Chandra was subsequently taken to the police station, but was released a few hours later after he denied the allegations and recorded his statement.
Lande's move to arrest a policemen from the neighbouring state kicked up a row in police circles.
Patna SSP Jitendra Rana said that he had sought a detailed report on the incident from the SP.
“The matter will be investigated on the basis of his report and suitable action will be taken,” Rana said.
Earlier in the day, Lande said that a cyber café owner in Patna named Pankaj had lodged a complaint with him that a team of policemen from the crime branch in Moradabad had been demanding a bribe of Rs 10,000 from him to settle an old case of cyber crime.
The shopkeeper had alleged that the UP police team had come to inquire about a SIM card which had been sold from his shop in 2012.
“They told me that the SIM which had been sold from my shop was being used for cyber crimes,” the shopkeeper said.
“The inspector asked me to give him Rs 10,000 to clear my name in the case,” he alleged.
The shopkeeper subsequently contacted Lande and informed him about the bribery demand. Thereafter, the UP inspector was called at Dak Bangalow Chowk where Lande, who was in a disguise wearing a red T-shirt and a stole, was awaiting him and the other policemen.
When the shopkeeper identified the inspector, Lande pounced on him and held him by his collar.
Helped by another policeman, he dragged the inspector to his vehicle to take him to the Kotwali police station.
Lande said that people will lose faith in the police if its personnel start indulging in activities like extortion.
Chandra, however, denied the allegation and said that the shopkeeper had framed him under a conspiracy. He said that he had come to Patna in connection with cases related to cyber crime.
“In my conscience, I am innocent,” he said. “You may take a look at my track record also.”
The Patna police, in the meantime, got in touch with their Moradabad counterparts about Chandra’s detention, but he was released later.
Police sources said that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.
Lande is known for his no-nonsense style of policing and has earned the monikers such as “Singham” and “Dabangg” over the years in Bihar.
Though he has won a considerable number of admirers among youngsters in the state, the Maharashtra-born officer has often raised the hackles of his seniors in the department for his style of functioning.
